There is good bird shooting to
be had in Russia, Astrakhan, Kazakhstan and Kustanay. To get to
the hunting areas, guests must first fly to either Moscow or Almaty
and then on by plane, train or automobile. First class cabins on
the sleeper train accommodate just two
people and an interpreter is provided for the party to ensure there
are no misunderstandings. Onward flights are by scheduled service
and car journeys are usually in Russian 4 x 4 vehicles.
The species hunted in these areas include capercaillie, blackcock,
woodcock, geese, ducks, chukar and quail. Duck species include teal,
wigeon, pintail, shoveller, mallard, fish duck, greater scaup, tufted
duck, red headed diver and goldeneye. The goose species are greylag
and pinkfoot. Trophy capercaillie and blackcock are hunted in the
Kirov area of Russia during the lek in late April and early May.
